Anton Rubinstein, Romance Op. 44 No. 1

The lovely Romance by the Russian Anton Rubinstein (1829-1894) was originally a miniature for piano, part of Six Soirées à Saint Petersbourg. With its tender, quietly impassioned melody, it was popularised by the cellists Casals and Piatigorsky. This transcription for double bass and piano has bowings and fingerings, suggested to underline its expressive effect, by Leon Bosch.
